I have been restoring furniture for some years now – starting back in New Zealand as a hobby and then later in England I began an apprenticeship, in restoration, with an Interior Decorator. The money was so bad, I was young, there were other things to see and do, so I spent the next years doing other things, one of them being employed as Manager in an antique business in Kent. Ending up in South Africa (of all places) married and starting up house etc – the old love of tradition, old furniture, beeswax – all came back with a vengeance, my fingers were itching – it was time to get back into giving old pieces of furniture new life – I dug out my old books went to various courses and learnt by doing – oh what fun! The whole turned into a small business. 10 years in SA, it was time to leave and the next stop Germany! Nothing to it – workshop has to go with – couldn’t speak the language, would be hard, but so long as I could play with wood it was ok. And so a new episode in the life of Rachel! It wasn’t long before I was finding ailing pieces of furniture (much to husbands distress) and disappearing into my workshop. In between school runs, house and homework and much help from neighbours I could start communicating in the lingo and restoring furniture for people. And so from one thing to another – here I am with a shop and workshop in Wollmerschied near Lorch. |
